It is with sadness that we announce that in early 2022, Martin Scurrah passed away.

Martin was at the core of our water programme at Draycote, and as such all activities there are on hold for the foreseeable.

Draycote Water

Based in Rugby, Draycote Water is home to a sailing club which host activities for Warwickshire Scouts. Run by Martin Scurrah and his rather buoyant team, groups can take part in sailing and pulling (also known as rowing) and have some amazing fun on the water!

For 2021, sailing will be a bit different to previous years. The Warwickshire Scouts Sailing Dinghies will again be based at Draycote Water Sailing Club, near Rugby. The aim is to make it easier for members to take part in an adventurous activity. There are Awards and Badges which can be earned through sailing. To find out more about this, please view our Sailing info pack by clicking the relevant button below.

However, it seems likely that face to face scout activities will still have to socially distanced for the foreseeable future, which isn’t possible in our normal dinghies. We are therefore planning to run two types of session, using borrowed single-handed dinghies:

Scouts and Explorers

Scouts and Explorers can use ‘Topper’ dinghies borrowed from 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts.

  • 6 young people per session
  • Full days sessions 10:30 to 15:30
  • Cost: £12 per young person per session
  • Dates:
    • 1, 15 and 29 May,
    • 12 and 19 June,
    • 3 July
    • Please note these are borrowed boats and only available on these dates.

Cubs can use ‘Optimist’ dinghies borrowed from Nuneaton Scouts.

  • 4 young people per session
  • Half days sessions: 10:30-12:30 and 13:30-15:30
  • Cost: £6 per young person per session
  • Dates:
    • 8 and 22 May,
    • 5 June,
    • 10 and 17 July
    • Please note these are borrowed boats and only available on these dates.

Advise for all sessions

  • NON SWIMMERS: There is a higher chance of a capsize using single handed boats. There is also higher probability of having to rescue non swimmers as opposed to swimmers in the event of a capsize. Current guidance is to avoid situations where somebody has to be rescued.
    • This will be reviewed as RYA / Scout guidance changes
  • Mixed section activities are not permitted, as set by current restrictions (as of March 2021).
  • Sailing is a very weather dependant activity, and there is a reasonable chance of cancellation due to weather with particularly young members.
  • You get wetter sailing in single handers than our usual boats,
  • Warm showers / changing rooms may not be available.

Unfortunately, due to the size of the boats, we cant run pulling sessions which meet current social distancing requirements.  We are monitoring the rule changes, and will arrange pulling sessions as soon as the requirements allow and it’s safe to do so.

Running water sessions at Draycote

Martin is always looking for additional competent dinghy sailors to act as instructors – Adults or Explorers.

A qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor would be brilliant – but realistically, if you are competent in a “two man” sailing dinghy and have the common sense required to take young people on the water, please get in touch – we can organise the paperwork and permits to get you on board!

You can see what dates are free for both activities by checking the County Sailing Calendar. Once you have found a date you wish to book, contact Martin Scurrah who manages our water activities at Draycote. Martin will pencil you in and give you the payment details – payment is via BACS to the County Treasurer. Due to the risk of cancellations or changes this year due to Covid, payment isn’t required until the session has taken place.
